Lately I have been doing ‘lazy research’ on vitamins and supplements that are good for my skin and more importantly my hair. In my quest to find products that can protect and nurture my crown, I came across some vitamins that not only protect hair, but promote healthy hair growth.
Now I’m not a health guru and I’m not much of a medicine or vitamin taker, so it’s safe to say that the consumption of vitamins and supplements on a regular basis is not too high on my priority list. BUT lately I have been doing ‘lazy research’ on vitamins and supplements that are good for my skin and more importantly my hair (if you didn’t know, my hair is my crown and glory and it must be healthy and LAID at all times). In my quest to find products that can protect and nurture my crown, I came across some vitamins that not only protect hair, but promote healthy hair growth. If you’re interested in taking supplements that promote healthy hair and growth, take a look at the list of vitamins below and see what might be a good fit for you and your crown.
Biotin is crucial for hair growth. Studies have shown that people who were low in biotin experienced slower hair and nail growth than people who had normal levels of biotin. If you have slow hair and nail growth, taking a biotin supplement may be good for you. Biotin is relatively inexpensive and can be found at your local pharmacy or at your local Target or Wal-Mart. I have purchased this vitamin for as little as two dollars and some change, so it’s not going to break your bank. One thing I will say is if you choose to take this vitamin be careful; it makes hair grow EVERYWHERE!
Inositol helps strengthen hair by helping the hair follicles retain moisture. I have never purchased this vitamin, but I did do some research and the average price is about five dollars and some change. If you have dry hair, then this vitamin will be good for you, because it will help your hair follicles retain moisture and prevent dryness.
Choline is taken into the body in very small amounts; however your body needs more in order to promote healthy hair growth. Choline works in conjunction with Inositol to promote healthy hair growth.
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and our hair follicles require a constant supply for optimal hair growth.
Water is the absolute BEST product for our hair. I know a lot of African American women run from water like the plague, but in all seriousness water is our greatest hair ally. Think about it like this:
When you want the grass on your front lawn to grow, what do you do? You water it! If you want the hair on your head to grow, what should you do? Water it! Now I’m not saying go dunk your head in a bucket of water each and every single day and expect hair that hangs long like Rapunzel! I’m simply suggesting that if you’d like for your hair to grow, water consumption is a must. Consuming 8 glasses of water per day or 64 ounces per day should get you on track to having healthier hair.
Now, I am certain there are a lot more vitamins and supplements out there that protect and promote the growth of hair, but these are just a few that I found. Despite the fact that I’m a horrible medicine/vitamin taker, I do believe taking vitamins and supplements can not only improve your hair health, but they can improve your overall health and wellness.
